The QIF Wizard Menu

The QIF Wizard menu, as shown at the left, allows you to enter the Registration dialog where you can purchase a registration code, retrieve a previously-purchased code, or enter your code.  You can also check for program updates, send an email to the author, or request to change the QIF Wizard Preferences.

Select Preferences... to change the preferences.

The File Menu

The File menu, as shown at the right, allows you to process a file by selecting the file via a standard file dialog. This is an alternative to dropping a file onto QIF Wizard or having QIF Wizard started as a browser helper application.

The File menu also allows you to process text in the clipboard.

When you select either of these menu items the Control dialog will appear.

You can also export or import Input Formats.  Formats are exported into .qmef files.  Double-clicking a .qmef file will start QIF Wizard and import the format.  The purpose of Exporting/Importing input formats is to be able to share with others.

The Edit Menu

The Edit menu, as shown at the left, allows you to edit existing bank or credit card instructions or to edit accounts or to edit categories or to edit descriptions previously entered or to edit the input formats used to control the extraction of QIF from text in the clipboard, or edit the output formats that control the format of non-QIF output or to edit the list of securities used to process investment transactions.

Editing Accounts

If your financial allows, you can export your list of accounts into a QIF file then open that file in QIF Wizard to import them.  If your financial software does not export account names, then you can manually create or  edit them by selecting Accounts... from the Edit menu, resulting in the dialog at the right.

Editing Categories

If your financial allows, you can export your list of categories into a QIF file then open that file in QIF Wizard to import them.  If your financial software does not export categories, then you can manually create or  edit them by selecting Categories... from the Edit menu, resulting in the dialog at the right.

Editing Input Formats

To edit formats that you have already defined, select Input Formats... from the Edit menu. The portions of an input format that can be changed are shown in the table and can be edited.  In addition, one or more formats can be deleted, duplicated (with the  button), or you can delete Type Definitions or Security Definitions associated with the selected format.  Deleting definitions is done via the gear menu:

If you choose Delete Type Definition..., a dialog similar to the following appears.

In this dialog you can select one or more type definitions to delete. When you delete a type definition, you will be prompted to redefine the type if the type is encountered again while extracting with the format.

If you choose Delete Security Definition..., a dialog similar to the following appears.

In this dialog you can select one or more security definitions to delete. When you delete a security definition, you will be prompted to redefine the security if the security is encountered again while extracting with the format.

Editing Output Formats

To edit output formats that you have already defined, select Output Formats... from the Edit menu. The result will be the dialog that appears at the right. You can click on a name to select it and then click one of the function buttons below to  Delete or Duplicate the selected format.  If you double-click a format name, it automatically edits the format.  You can also create a new format.

Duplicating a format makes a complete copy of the format with the name <Old Name> Copy.

Editing a format allows you to change any portion of the format. When you edit a format, a dialog like the following appears.

Editing Securities

To process investment transactions, QIF Wizard needs to know the names of securities as known to your financial software.  If possible, you would export your security names from your financial software into a QIF file and open that file with QIF Wizard to populate this list.  If you later add another security, you could go through that procedure again, or you could just use this function to add the security.

If your financial software cannot export such a list, you can use this function to create the list.

Every entry in the list must have a name, but the Symbol is optional.  If present, the Symbol will be used to match transactions as well as the Name.
