Preferences
There are a number of options for controlling how ImageBrowser looks and behaves.
These are available in the application preferences dialog, which you can open by
selecting Preferences from the application menu.
The preferences dialog is split into two tabs. These tabs and the options available
in each one are described below.
File List
- New windows open at ...
This controls what folder is displayed when you open a new window. 'Same Folder'
opens the new window and shows the same folder you are currently viewing,
'Parent Folder' shows the folder above the current folder, and
'Pictures Folder' opens the pictures folder in your home folder.
- Dropping folder on icon
This controls what happens when you drag and drop a folder icon from the Finder onto the
ImageBrowser icon in the dock. It can either use an existing window, if one is open, or
open a new window to show the contents of the folder.
- File list font size
This sets the size of the font used to display the file names in the file list.
- Long file name display
This sets the way long file names are shown in the file list. If the name is too long
to be shown fully, the name will be shortened using the method selected in this popup.
- Thumbnail size
This controls the size of the thumbnails and icons in the file list.
- Show only supported image and movie files
When this is selected the file list will only display those files in the
current folder that are image or movies files. Folders are always displayed.
- Smooth thumbnails
This option makes ImageBrowser smooth thumbnail images when it creates them. This
will slow down the thumbnail creation slightly.
- Confirm when deleting files and folders
When this option is on, ImageBrowser will ask you to confirm any file or folder deletes.
- Delete key moves selected files to the trash
When this is enabled the delete key will move the selected items to the trash. If the option is not enabled then you need to use cmd-delete to move the items to the trash.
- Rename with mouse clicks.
When enabled, you can rename files and folders by clicking their name in the file list with the mouse. If it is not enabled, clicking with the mouse will not start a file rename.
- Vertical drag in file list selects
If enabled, when you select an item then drag the mouse vertically while holding down the mouse button, additional files will be selected. If not enabled, a vertical drag will start a drag and drop operation.
- Hide folders hidden in Finder
Hides the folders such as /etc and /bin that are not shown by the Finder.
-
Store Thumbnails in selected folder
If set, the thumbnails are stored in the folder specified in the edit box, otherwise they are stored
in the same folder as the original image file (in a folder called 'Thumbnails' or '.Thumbnails', depending
on the state of the Hide Thumbnails from the Finder option.
Important: Changing this setting does not move or delete any thumbnails that have already
been created. These old thumbnails will not be used and you will have to remove them manually. You
may also have to refresh the file list for the change to take effect.
- Hide Thumbnail folders from the Finder
When this option is set the thumbnail folders are named .Thumbnails, so
that they are not displayed in Finder windows. If the option is not set the thumbnails will be stored in a folder called Thumbnails, and these folders will be visible in the Finder
Viewing
- Make thumbnail when image is viewed
Select this option to have a thumbnail made automatically for any image file as it is viewed
in the image view.
- Animate animated GIFs
This option sets whether an image containing animation, such as an animated GIF, will animate when viewed. this option only works in OS X 10.3 or later.
- Show folder preview
When this is selected, and a folder is selected in the file list, ImageBrowser will
try and find an image in that folder and display the image in the image view. This
previews the images that might be stored in the folder. This may slow down
browsing around your folders.
- Stop if making preview takes too long
If ImageBrowser cannot load a preview images for a folder within a short period of time it will stop and not display a preview image. This will speed up navigating through a list of folders.
- View mode for floating windowsr
This sets the view mode that is used for new floating image view windows, opened
by double-clicking an images icon.
- Image Zoom factor
This is the factor by which an image is enlarged or decreased in size when the
zoom commands are used. For example, a factor of 1.5 changes the size by 1 and a half times.
- background Colour
This sets the colour used for the image background. Note that you will only see this if the image contains areas where the background can show through. This will also be effected by an alpha channel, so you may end up not seeing the background colour if the image contains an alpha channel.
Movies & Sound
- Enable movie viewing and sound playing
This option is used to enable or disable the display of movies and sound in the
viewer. Because of the time required for QuickTime to load an movies, browsing
through the files in a folder can be slower if movie previewing is enabled.
- Play movies and sounds automatically
If enabled, a movie or sound is played automatically when the movie or sound file is selected, otherwise if not enabled you must start the playing manually.
- Movie Zoom factor
This is the factor by which a movie is enlarged or decreased in size when the
zoom commands are used. For example, a factor of 1.5 changes the size by 1 and a half times.

- File Types
Lists the file types of movie and sound files. Each entry in the list can be either a file extension or a
4-character type code, in single quotes (e.g. 'MPEG'). ImageBrowser uses these types to determine whether
a file is a movie or sound file.
Editing
- Editor applications
You can set up a list of applications which appear in the Edit toolbar list. You can then select from the list to edit the selected images in the application you choose. Use the Add button to add items to the list, and the Remove button to remove the selected item from the list. The Default button sets the selected application as the application that is used when the Edit command from the File menu is executed. The default item is moved to the top of the list.
